Texas Vacation Rentals That Trade the Highway for High Desert
You know Big Bend, the Hill Country, and the Gulf Coast better than most travelers ever will. Now trade all three for something entirely different. A vacation rental in Texas at Verde Retreat Center puts you in New Mexico’s high desert forest, a landscape built for the kind of stillness Texas’ open plains only hint at, without asking you to book a flight to get there.
- A Genuine Change of Scenery
- Wide Open Unpolluted Skies
- Room for Your Whole Group
Skies Built for Stargazing
Leave city glow behind and look up at stars as vivid as the ones you know from West Texas nights, minus the long drive home afterward.
Trails Instead of Traffic
Swap Palo Duro Canyon for piñon-covered high desert trails, each one just steps from your door and ready whenever you feel like walking.
Campfire Evenings, Reimagined
Trade cowboy-style cooking for a fireside evening in the common house, sharing stories the same way you would back home in Texas.
Movement That Moves You
Join a dance workshop built around free expression, a fresh take on the rhythm you already bring from Texas two-step nights out and social dances back home.
Familiar Comforts, New Terrain
A Texas Vacation Rental Getaway with a Completely Different Backdrop
You already appreciate what Texas offers, from Austin’s music scene to San Antonio’s history at The Alamo, and that appreciation for open land and big skies translates perfectly to a stay here. Book a rental vacation getaway in Texas and expect stargazing that rivals what you find under Texas’ own unpolluted skies, minus any light pollution creeping in from nearby towns and highways. The terrain shifts from flat plains to piñon forest, giving you a backdrop that feels both familiar in spirit and entirely new to the eye.
Mornings here start slow, with guided meditation or a quiet nature walk instead of a rush to beat the Texas heat before it settles in. Afternoons might mean a breathwork session or a farm-to-table style meal built around local ingredients, and evenings wind down around a fire, swapping stories the way you would back home in the Hill Country. Bring the whole family and spread across multiple houses, or come alone and let the quiet do the work you came here for in the first place.
Even the drive itself becomes part of the trip. Whether you start from Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, or anywhere along the Gulf Coast, the terrain shifts gradually from familiar Texas plains into pine-covered high desert, giving you time to unwind well before you unpack. Many travelers treat that stretch of highway as the first real breath of the getaway, long before they ever reach the property gate.

THAT NEW MEXICO SKY…
The setting is remote and quiet—when we watched the lunar eclipse the stars and milky way were incredibly bright, and my son, sleeping in the tipi, heard coyotes at night. But Taos, with its restaurants, shopping, galleries, organic foods market, and Taos Pueblo is only 45 minutes away, Ojo Caliente Hot Springs is a half-hour drive, and there are numerous scenic drives and hiking trails in the general area, as well as Angel Fire downhill mountain biking the other side of Taos. It was a perfect place to meet up with our children and to relax and begin our month-long holiday in the Four Corners area. And Elizabeth was so welcoming and helpful. We hope to return someday.

GuestHIGH DESERT HAVEN
I was looking for a getaway that would have everything: first-rate accommodations, solitude, yet near both good hiking and civilization. Vista Verde was all of this, and more. From my very first contact with Elizabeth, I felt immediately welcome. She is professional, hospitable, informative. I stayed at the Q house, a charming, cozy, and sunny abode nestled among piñon trees. From there, I explored Taos, the Rio Grande Gorge, and many stunning area hikes. I can’t recommend this property enough for those looking to get away for a few days– or, like me, nearly two weeks. I can’t wait to go back!

GuestPERFECT GETAWAY
My daughter made my reservation for me, so I didn’t know what to expect. What an incredible surprise to arrive and find such a secluded, warm, safe, and beautifully furnished home. We were able to prepare all our meals, entertain my daughter’s family, with three small children, and have our meals and conversation around a large table, while through the windows enjoy the true beauty of the surrounding landscape. The home is maintained well and very clean. We look forward to our next visit and highly recommend staying at Vista Verde Retreat.

GuestRELAXING RETREAT
Vista Verde Retreat was an excellent getaway from the hassles of city life. We really enjoyed the setup of the main house and the casitas – a great way to enjoy the solitude and beauty of the New Mexican countryside. The owner is very knowledgeable about the area and makes sure that everything is going smoothly with the property. The place is well maintained and the photos accurately reflect this. Highly recommend you stay here. Great location!

Absolutely. Families often book several houses together and use the shared common spaces for meals, games, and downtime between planned activities each day, and most find the loose schedule easier to enjoy than a packed itinerary.
